In Death: Unchained is a new and challenging fantasy RPG experience for PC. In Death is an online, text-based RPG with a focus on story and character development. The plot takes the player into the afterlife, where they must find their way through a dark and twisted world. The game is completely text-based, meaning that there are no graphics, sound effects, music, or other visual elements to distract from the story.

In Death: Unchained is a game about being an imprisoned god, and the only way to escape is to ascend into heaven and wage war on your enemies. It is an action-adventure survival game, which means that you fight monsters, solve puzzles and explore dungeons.

In Death: Unchained is a first-person survival horror game where you play as a recently deceased detective who must save his daughter from an evil warlock. To do this, he will have to go through a series of timed trials, each with different objectives and levels of difficulty. After choosing your character’s gender, you will be thrust into the game world, where you are tasked with learning the rules of the land and navigating your way through its many, varied and deadly locations.

Death: Unchained is a free cross-platform bullet hell shooter that uses real-time 3D visuals for PC, Mac, and Linux. This game is still in its early stages, therefore it is far from perfect, but it has a lot of potential.

I was ecstatic when I first heard about the new ‘In Death: Unchained’ game from the Gambitious team. They were attempting to develop a next-generation bow-shooter that would take the genre to new heights in terms of gameplay. This is exactly what I’ve always wanted in a bow-shooter, so I went ahead and pre-ordered the game, which is now available on Steam.

‘In Death: Unchained’ is a new free-to-play roguelike bow-shooter with a unique and slightly frightening concept. Don’t let the fact that it’s a free-to-play game fool you into thinking it’s gimmicky or superficial. It’s a strange little duckling with a peculiar take on the genre.

 

With a few differences, In Death: Unchained is nearly identical to its predecessor, In Death (2018), which we gave a solid [8/10] on the PC VR platform. The game has been out of Early Access for two years, and the current, Quest-exclusive edition has the majority of the positives. It would be a disgrace to pretend that the game is same. While Unchained will surely fall short of Quest’s inside-out tracking abilities, the roguelike bow-own shooter’s brand of total failure will nonetheless be fun to play.

Gameplay

If you haven’t played In Death on another platform, you’re in for a death march that, depending on your personality type, may or may not be a guilty pleasure. It’s a difficult game with new, more lethal ammunition upgrades, spending money, and all the achievements you can shake a bow at as a reward for your perseverance. As with many roguelike games, you’ll die and die again simply to feel alive.

The punishing aspect of the randomly generated game is harsh. In Death has three separate levels: Purgatory, Paradise Lost, and the game’s newest addition, Abyss. You’ll be assigned the Sisyphean task of entering Purgatory II after completing one cycle around all three levels, where you’ll face more difficult opponents. You advance to Paradise Lost II, Abyss II, Purgatory III, and so on until either you or the Universe dies of heat, whichever comes first.

In addition to the game’s brilliant mix of ground and air-type opponents, three vicious bosses will put your willpower to the test. Your run will be over if you die even once, so make sure you have all of your best weapons on hand. There are a few save spots to help you cut down on the amount of time you spend playing each session, but if you die, you’re back to square one, with new unlocked upgrades and opponents. It’s a fun, but not too difficult game that offers you just enough incentive to come back for more as you progress (aka fail).

I’m going to say it: In Death was plainly not designed for today’s generation of Oculus headsets with inside-out tracking. The ability of the VR headset to accurately resolve the user’s dominant hand at a naturally close distance from the user’s face is critical in archery games, which the original 2016 Rift and SteamVR-tracked headsets excel at.

“How about the crossbow?” you ask. True, because the game’s crossbow is effectively a manual pistol rather than a bow that requires a broad draw, it avoids the tracking volume issue. I can’t speak for either side, but long-term In Death gamers appear to be split on whether the crossbow enhances or diminishes the entire experience.

For serious In Death players, the scoreboard is everything, and within a few hours after the game went live, crossbow players topped the global standings in user points. The crossbow, on the other hand, makes a lot of sense on Quest because it provides a near-perfect 1:1 gameplay experience across all platforms. Using a rapid fire reload approach to gank a swarm of ghouls is also a lot of fun.

Immersion

The PC VR version of the game is the game’s graphics champion, and while the Quest port has decreased the quality to fit on a mobile chipset, it still gives a game that feels nearly complete graphically. If I had to pick a flaw, it would be Unchained’s rendering distance, which makes it more difficult to distinguish opponents for long-range shots. This isn’t a big deal because you’ll be fighting in close quarters for the most part.

The controls aren’t always straightforward; you might have to go through the entire set of buttons to acquire a health chalice or a new arrow kind, but you’ll get used to it.

As we mentioned in our PC review, the game’s spectacular Gothic architecture, which includes church steeples, monastery courtyards, and long bridges, creates stunning panoramas.

Comfort

Although it makes sense to play exclusively with the teleport arrow or portable teleport shard from a comfort standpoint, the authors have also incorporated smooth mobility and adjustable snap-turn.

Smooth mobility moves at a sluggish, plodding pace, but the game’s constant dodging and resulting lateral movement can be unnerving for long periods of time.

The game’s ‘unchained’ nature is without a doubt the most significant enhancement in terms of comfort, if you can call it that. It’s wonderful to be free of the wires once more, allowing you to fully explore your talents to evade oncoming arrows and duck behind obstructions. It’s easy to lose track of your first monitoring zone, so be sure your Guardian is turned on and calibrated correctly.

Even so, the game may be played while sitting, although due to the nature of firing and reloading, you’ll require a wide range of motion in both hands.

Death: Unchained is a bow-shooter roguelike from the creators of FTL: Faster Than Light, and getting to 100% completion took me longer than I thought. But, in the end, I triumphed after defeating the last boss, and I can now call it one of my favorite games.
