We have seen a lot of questions about the ability to update Win32 apps in the Store. So, what is the deal here? The answer is actually pretty simple. As was the case with the Windows 10 Store, apps that are installed via the Store are not allowed to be updated on the device. We have implemented the same restrictions for apps that are installed via the Windows Store on Windows 8.1.
Win32 programs (like Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) that you install from the Windows Store are not written for the new Universal Windows Platform (UWP) that was introduced with Windows 10 Creators Update. Microsoft is committed to making UWP apps available for Win32-compatible apps to ensure that users are able to continue to use their favorite productivity tools on Windows. Over the past year, we’ve made tremendous progress to make UWP apps available on the Windows Store for Win32-compatible apps, but we want to ensure our users have the right tools to get the most out of Windows.

Developers will be able to distribute an Installer via the Store as well as a download for the program from their own CDN as a result of this.

Additionally, purchasing an app through the Store indicates that we will still have to deal with various installers in our taskbar.
