Everyone says that meditation is good for you, but not everyone can tell you what it is or how to do it. Many people believe that the only way to get better at meditation is to do it every day for hours on end. But the truth is, meditation works best when you make it a regular part of your life, doing it at any time, anywhere.
Some people prefer to start their spiritual practice while they’re young, while others wait until they’re older. If you’re part of the latter group, you may feel like you’re already in your late 30s or early 40s and stuck without any spiritual practice. The good news is that there’s no reason to be stuck! Just because you’re in your mid-40s or older doesn’t mean you have to be stuck. It’s possible to get to the point where you regularly meditate and feel spiritually connected.
For me, meditation has always been something I’ve wanted to do, but it was difficult to find time to practice. I didn’t have the time, the patience, the dedication, or really, much of anything else really. I’ve been an avid meditator since the summer of 2009, and have been at it at least 2-3 times a week since then. When you start meditating, it can be hard to know what’s going on. Are you doing it right? How do you want it to look? If you don’t go to a weekly meditation class, it can be difficult to navigate this area.
I’ve spent almost 14,000 hours in meditation over 20 years, so I thought it would be helpful to share some general experiences. If you know what to expect, you can stay on track. But there is one important caveat that I need to address from the outset.
Meditation is like nothing else
Meditation doesn’t look like anything special. It is a choice, an action and a process. You learn to focus your thoughts on one thing and put everything else aside. This feeling varies depending on the day, the weather, your mood and what you ate this morning.
Meditation is about acceptance, being with what is and not resisting it. It’s a choice to be okay with what happens. Your goal is not to respond or manipulate your experience in any way. Like an old stone, in winter, spring, summer and fall, you don’t move from your place.
It’s not easy for most of us. It’s also hard to remember that meditation doesn’t have to look like this or that – we like goals: Target, direction, hit the target accurately. We want something specific to be the focus of our intention.
But meditation is different. You train your attention to let go of things, to learn to let go of everything and be still. In this calmness, you will learn why meditation is a miracle. Here are ten experiences you will have as you develop your meditation practice.
1. Roughness
Sometimes you feel like sleeping during meditation. I sat there for hours, experiencing at once both the pinnacle of sublime bliss and the epic struggle to keep my eyelids (and the rest of my body!) from collapsing. Don’t feel uncomfortable. It happens.
2. Dejection and confusion
Confusion and dullness are common in meditation. Leave things as they are and move on. It’s not supposed to be about you. Sometimes the road is bumpy, sometimes it’s smooth. But you’re in it for the long haul, so it doesn’t matter. Just observe and accept it as it is.
3. You’re gonna explode
We all move very fast. So if you sit down to relax, calm down and let the situation play out, you might be in for a surprise. Sometimes it feels like you’ve been stuffed into a Vitamix blender, given steroids by the Incredible Hulk, or are about to explode. You might even start to sweat.
Don’t worry about it. Slowing down, like meditation, can bring out all the stress and tension you’ve been keeping under the surface. Meditation relieves this pressure. It’ll pass. Put your seat belt on.
4. Excitement
It is not uncommon to become agitated during meditation. Your feet burn, your knees ache, your skin burns, and it’s like someone hooked you up with Dr. Frankenstein’s Happy Table when you weren’t looking. Of course, it’s hard to be calm, relaxed and attentive when this happens.
But let me tell you, if you stay calm and hold a powerful intention, you’ll feel like a true champion when it’s all over.
5. Boredom
Sometimes the meditation seems to last a little less than an eternity, even though only five minutes have passed. Who knows why it happens sometimes, but it happens. Time slows down and you officially enter turtle time. Time is slowing down and you are not. It’s a strange, even unpleasant experience.
6. Inspiration
When you meditate, it can seem like all the parts of your life are beautifully aligned. Powerful patterns emerge in your mind, creative ideas are born, your next masterpiece appears in its final form.
Tempting as it may be, a dip into this creative cauldron will lead to a quick end to meditation. They are there to meditate and detach from the world.
7. Tranquility
During meditation you can experience an incredible state of relaxation. All your worries, fears, perplexities, old grudges and wounds will disappear. Life is beautiful and sweet, like a sunny tropical day in a crystal blue lagoon. There’s really nothing to worry about.
It’s a wonderful experience. Remember, it comes and goes like the wind. Enjoy it, but don’t get used to it.
8. Bliss
Bliss is common in meditation. Suddenly, like a geyser, a rich source of energy gushed from within. Her body is filled with ecstasy and an intoxicating sense of the goodness and beauty of life. You’ve gone a little crazy (no pun intended).
9. Awe
It is amazing to be amazed at life and your own existence. This can happen in meditation as nowhere else. You can sit in the back of the fish house and you will always be impressed by the wonder of it all.
Somehow you see the great order of things. Everything makes sense. There is no friction in the system. It is truly amazing and you are the luckiest person in the world because you are in the midst of it NOW and enjoying every moment with every part of your being.
10. Immobility
True silence is one of the most dizzying experiences of meditation. If you’re really quiet, it’s like you disappear. It’s such a beautiful and sweet place. It’s also mysterious. Their senses are developing to take in everything.
They become permeable to the world; there is no longer a sense of inside or outside. There’s only one thing going on. You don’t want to disturb this delicate area. They just want to dissolve more and more into that entity.
